As part of our partnership with In Situ, we're very proud to support Sura Medura an international artists residency centre based in Sri Lanka.
Artists from all disciplines are invited to submit proposals to create work that is enchanted by time spent in Sri Lanka.
Selected artists are offered mentorship and opportunities to meet with their peers in the Sri Lankan arts community, and they have the opportunity to present the resulting work in Sri Lanka and Scotland.
Working with the Sura Medura residency centre and UZ Arts we offer two UK artists a year a place at the residency centre.
Sura Medura is an International Artist Residency centre in Hikkaduwa, South West Sri Lanka. It was established in 2011 and offers funded opportunities for European (incl. UK) based artists and self funded opportunities for artists from elsewhere.
It was founded to continue the artistic programme of the Chandrasevana Centre that was established by the Hikkaduwa Area Relief Fund.
Artists from all disciplines are invited to submit proposals to create work that is enchanted by being developed in Sri Lanka. Selected artists are offered mentorship and opportunities to meet with their peers in the Sri Lankan arts community. They are also opportunities to present the resulting work in Sri Lanka and Scotland.
The Residency Programme supports artists from all disciplines of art whose work can be enhanced by being made in Sri Lanka. Residencies are for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of three months. The Sura Medura centre can accommodate up to 10 people and there is often more than one artist staying.
Sura Medura has close contacts with the local and national artistic community, including the Colombo Art Biennale and the Colombo University of Visual and Performing Arts. It provides mentorship in advance of the visit and support during the residency with introductions to their peers locally and in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city. Artists will be encouraged to make a presentation about their practice at the beginning of their stay and the output of their residency at the end.
Funded residencies at Sura Medura can cover transport, food, accommodation and fees.
Artists can be self-funded or apply to schemes in the country where they are based. Sura Medura currently has relationships with funding organisations in the UK, Ireland, the Czech Republic and European countries in the IN SITU network.
