Finnish artist Henna Asikainen presents NEST, a video installation exploring our connection to nature and green spaces, created in collaboration with communities around Hull and Morecambe. The project explores what it means to feel at home in a landscape and how nature can bring a sense of connection and belonging.

NEST is part of On Our Doorsteps, a nationwide project exploring the relationship between urban communities and the green spaces around us.

About The Artists

This project was co-produced by We Live Here working in Hull with Freedom Festival and in Morecambe with Lancaster Arts. It was created through a programme of walks, conversations and creative actions with local people in the two places.

Henna Asikainen is a Finnish artist based in the UK. Her artwork focuses on humans’ complex relationship with nature and its intersections with social justice, climate justice, migration and notions of belonging. Her work is often made with the participation of people who have a lived experience of displacement and of seeking sanctuary.

We Live Here seeks out new ways of imagining, exploring and celebrating our shared and individual relationships with the natural world. It nurtures collaborations and conversations between artists, communities and many other organisations and agencies that maintain, protect and increase our understanding of the natural world. Connecting local and global perspectives, it asks how the arts can drive conversations between local communities, nationally and internationally, about the environmental challenges that face our cities, our planet and all of us who live on it.
