We were very proud to co-commission this project last year in the frame of our Creative Europe Funded IN SITU network. CREATE IN PUBLIC SPACE, the first MOOC dedicated to artistic creation in public space, was produced by the team at Fai-Ar in Marseille and ARTCENA (French national centre for circus arts, street arts and theatre), with input from all partners of the network including ourselves and the two other UK partners Norfolk & Norwich Festival and UZ Arts.
The Create in Public Space MOOC will provide an exclusive international resource on artistic creation in public space. The course targets artists around the world who are interested in creating and thinking about art in public space. It may also interest cultural planners and programmers, institutional managers, elected officials and staff working for local authorities. It will be open to anyone who is interested.
In response to the present situation, the MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) ‘Create in Public Space’ has re-opened for registration. This is the first online course dedicated to creation in public space, and we are really keen to encourage our friends and networks, as well students, artists and creatives from Hull and East Yorkshire to take part.
What is public space? Why do artists choose to work in these unconventional places? How do they use these spaces around the world? What kinds of legislation and technical characteristics do professionals have to take into account?
The course is led by experts in outdoor arts, and lasts for one month with a different theme covered in each of the four weeks:
Week 1 – Introduction to aesthetics, history and institutions
Week 2 – Specific dramaturgical issues
Week 3 – Site-visit and in situ writing methodology
Week 4 – Understanding issues related to the relationship with the audience
You can access this 4-week MOOC packed with tools and inspiration to help you understand and play a role in artistic creation in public space.
As you progress through the course, you will learn about different artworks designed for public space, the way they interact with their locations, and the specific features of writing and audience relations in this context.
You will be given methodological tools and practical exercises to help you try out these ideas and take on the role of a creator. You will get support from various European artists and professionals, who will share their experience and knowledge with you.
This content will provide three-hour learning sessions each week, broken down into:
• about fifteen lessons, in the form of short 3-minute videos
• 5 to 10 additional interviews with European artists and professionals
• educational activities such as quiz and practical exercises, for testing comprehension and putting knowledge into practice
Additional resource documents allow you to “go further”: each week, those summarise the lessons and key notions, providing external links to help you find out more about all the artistic projects mentioned in the course.
As well as lessons, you will be given various activities to complete, to assess your understanding and aid your learning. These may be automated quizzes, assignments to complete or personal pieces of work that will receive comments on the forum.
You will receive an achievement badge for every week you complete, and students that complete the entire MOOC will receive an achievement certificate at the end of the course.
Registration opens at midday on 30th March 2020. To register, or find out more, click here to go to the Create in Public Space website.
