Wai Wan

Wai is second-generation British-born Chinese raised in Hull by Hong Kong Chinese parents. As an artist, producer and remixer, he has released music for major and independent labels, internationally for over twenty years, receiving support from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6), Mixmaster Morris (NTS Radio). His single Goddess was ranked amongst the all-time top twenty Nu-Jazz records on Worldwide FM. Following the release of his album Distraction, Wai has since performed across venues in Leeds, Manchester, New York, and London, including the legendary Plastic People, Hacienda, Band on the Wall and Big Chill festival. He has also worked on collaborative commissions for Castlefield Gallery, Studio Eleven as part of the BBC Contains Strong Language, PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Biennial.

Wai’s recent explorations into music composition involves modular synthesis and the manipulation of field recordings, juxtaposing familiar sentiments in unfamiliar settings through the notion of imagined nostalgia.
